Amoxicillin belongs to a group of penicillin antibiotic. It is a moderate beta-lactam antibiotic, applied for the treatment of bacterial infections. It is absorbed easily and therefore it is widely prescribed by the doctors. It is available as a product of GlaxoSmithKline under the brand name -Amoxil.
Before starting the treatment with Amoxicillin it would probably be useful to know several facts about the drug:
- Amoxicillin inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. The formula refered to as co-amoxiclav is a completely different drug containing Amoxicillin and Clavulanic acid – a name approved by the United Kingdom. However, it is usually known by its proprietary name – Augmentin.
- The medicine is commonly prescribed to women and children under the age of 8. It is usually available in the form of pills.
- You should avoid taking Amoxicillin if you have ever had any allergic reactions to any type of penicillin or to a cephalosporin.
- Consult with your doctor, in case there are any problems related to kidney or you suffer from infectious mononucleosis. Taking Amoxicillin in presence of such disorders may lead to a row of adverse side effects.
- Amoxicillin refers to the FDA pregnancy category B drugs. So, if you are pregnant, or planning to get pregnant while taking Amoxicillin, it is strongly recommended to consult your health care provider immediately.
Remember that Amoxicillin is a rather strong antibiotic and if you are not sure in the correctness of your choice it is suggested to receive a valuable medical consultation before taking the medicine.
